Maroc Update October 21 2011
The
Tangential Morocco (aka Maroc) tour is on hold. Morocco has not
experienced anything like the turmoil in the rest of North Africa but
who knows what the conditions will be like a year from now?
The
Morocco (aka Maroc) tour is a diverse cultural adventure that reflects
the Tangents tour philosophy of full cultural immersion. We mix with
locals and avoid tourist style lodging and eateries.
Music
happens in Morocco - it's in the air. However, Morocco doesn't have the
infrastructure that Turkey does that enables advance concert
organizing. We will likely arrange a couple of concerts and various
impromptu music happenings. There is moderate physical activity
although not strenuous. We have a nature hike in Tafraoute's gorgeous
Ameln Valley and also hike to a waterfall in the Berber mountain
village, Setti Fatma. We trek in the Sahara amid rich sand dunes
(either by foot or camel, your choice).
We
begin in Marrakech which has a public square like no other. Djemaa el
Fna is a spectacle in full sensory overcharge with musicians, acrobats,
snake charmers, etc., and the aroma of grilled meats and vegetables
rising from the many tasty food stalls. We move to the calm and
beautiful port town of Essaouira where Gnawa music and Saharan blues
fill the air from the many cd and instrument shops. It's the town Bob
Marley once lived and Jimi Hendrix visited, and is filled with
musicians and artists. Next we experience authentic Berber village life
in places like Tafraout nestled high in the Anti Atlas Mountains. We
then have an adventurous travel through a mountainous gorge and arrive
at our nomad camp in the Sahara desert and stay for 3 nights. Next we
stay in the desert frontier town Zagora. Among possible day trip
excurions are a traditional pottery collective, historic Koranic center
and the ancient Jewish Mellah. On our way back to Marrakech we visit
the stunning kasbah Aït Benhaddou. This UNECO World Heritage Site has
been a popular film location dating back to when director David Lean
chose it for the 1962 classic Lawrence of Arabia.
There
is planned free time so you can reap the rewards of individual
exploration. You'll experience the genuine warmth and hospitality of
the Moroccan people including Berber, Arabic, Toureg and nomad.
Tangents groups have wonderful chemistry. It's beautiful to lead groups that support each other and see friendships emerge.
Explore the links near the top and bottom of the page including testimonials, philosophy, itinerary and fine print.
In
a world filled with government and media fed misperceptions, it is more
important than ever to experience other cultures first hand.
peace through travel and music,
Dore
